Second Annual PVHS Wounded Warrior Fundraiser Raised Needed Funds for Injured Service Members
On Friday, June 8, Putnam Valley High School hosted the second annual Wounded Warrior Project Chicken Barbecue Fundraiser. Again, PVHS teacher Bruce Ludovicy and former PVHS teacher Tom Dunphy were the organizers, with the help of a number of student and adult PVCSD volunteers. In addition to the chicken barbecue, there was a fun run, raffles, and other games and activities. A student band provided musical accompaniment to the afternoon's festivities. The event sold more then 350 pounds of chicken and at press time had grossed $6,000 in food and raffle tickets, plus another $6,000 in donations. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project.
Bruce Ludovicy is very dedicated to Wounded Warrior and has garnered much support from the PV schools and the surrounding community. "We raffled off a wheelbarrow full of garden tools from Oregon Hardware, $300 in jewelry from ASL Design, a $700 solid white ash bench from Fantasy Woodworking, and $140 in free bowling passes from Cortlandt Lanes. East Coast Foods donated hot dogs. Grammy's Gardens of Warwick, NY, donated flowers."
He added, "I would like to thank Deputy Rich Mansfield for helping out with the logistics of the event, Barbara O'Hare and Caroline Heller for organizing the food booth, and Jerry Zupan, Guy Cohen, and Mark Trabakino for cooking. Al Giordano from Wounded Warrior said that he was truly amazed by not only the community support that we received but also was taken back by the hospitality which the vets received. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the cause. The student support in Putnam Valley never ceases to amaze me. We truly have some of the greatest kids that I have ever had the honor of working with."
The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is to raise public awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members to aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
WWP accomplishes this mission by providing programs and services to severely injured active service members and their families during the critical time between their initial rehabilitation while on active duty and their eventual transition to civilian life. WWP employs staff with decades of combined experience in providing direct services to active duty service members and disabled veterans, including benefits counseling, representation before the Department of Veterans' Affairs, bringing public attention to the needs of wounded service members, and advocating for regulatory and statutory changes beneficial to veterans and active duty service members.
There are many military service organizations that provide services to active duty service members and their families, and many veteran service organizations that provide services and opportunities for fraternal interaction to veterans upon their discharge from service. However, few organizations devote their resources to assisting the severely wounded during this critical period. WWP fills this vital, unmet need, bringing comfort, support, and aid to severely injured service members and their families during this challenging time in their lives. www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
