144 Hudson Valley Students Earn Lottery's Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship

New York Lottery Director Robert J. McLaughlin has announced that 144 graduating high school seniors from Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess, Westchester, Putnam, and Ulster Counties have earned the Lottery's 2007 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship. In making the announcement, Director McLaughlin confirmed an increase in the Scholarship amount.

"With the generous support of Governor Spitzer, the New York Lottery has increased the amount of the Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship from $4,000 over four years to $5,000 over the same time period. The Lottery recognizes that affordability is often the deciding factor for many families considering post secondary education options," Director McLaughlin said. "For that reason and many others, the Lottery is pleased to be able to offer today's college-bound students the extra means to achieve their dreams of becoming New York's Leaders of Tomorrow."

The Lottery announced it plans to award a total of 1,150 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships to graduating high school seniors statewide, including the 144 awards earned by students in the Hudson Valley. Since the program's debut in 2000, the Lottery has awarded nearly 9,000 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships representing a total investment of nearly $38 million. A complete list of 2007 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship winners is available at nylottery.org.

The New York Lottery awards its annual $5,000 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship to one graduating senior from every participating public and private high school in New York State. Schools may choose to opt out of the program at their own discretion. More than 90% of eligible New York High Schools participated in the 2007 award cycle.

To be eligible to receive the Lottery Scholarship, students must demonstrate at least a "B" average, be active in their community and plan to attend a New York-accredited college, university, trade school or community college. Scholarship monies are paid directly to the school of the recipient's choice to help offset the cost of attendance at that school, Moving forward, Scholarship monies will be paid in increments of $1,250 per year.

The New York Lottery, the largest lottery in the country and the sixth largest in the world, has generated more than $31 billion in revenue to help support education in New York State, including a record $2.3 billion in fiscal year 2006-2007 on revenues of $7.18 billion.
