PVMS Students Turn Math Into Money for St. Jude's

This year Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS) math teacher, Phyllis Conlin, and her fellow math teachers helped to initiate what will likely become a regular annual event- the St. Jude's Math-A-Thon. This event combines both academics and community service: two of the District's key objectives for producing well-rounded, independent learners. These hardworking students raised $6774.20, all of which goes directly to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

One hundred fifteen students from grades 6 through 8 participated. They each completed 220 grade-appropriate math problems and obtained sponsors for every problem. Participants were awarded prizes according to the amount of money raised, and the work was completed independently. The top prizes went to 8th grader Lisa Barone and 6th grader Luke Liszewski. They each raised over $300 and were presented with a digital camera.

The event coordinators were PVMS teachers Karen Brothers, Gerry Carlin, Mary Kay Cohen, Phyllis Conlin and Heather Miench. Ms Conlin noted, "We all are extremely proud of the time and commitment these students made for a worthy cause."

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported primarily by public contributions through programs such as the Math-A-Thon. For more information on the Math- A-Thon program, visit http:// www.mathathon.org/
