Marissa Gannon of Haldane Named a Putnam County Children's Committees 2007 Scholarship Winner

The Scholarship Committee of the Putnam County Children's Committee is awarding scholarships this year to six seniors who plan to go to college. The winners were chosen based on academic goals, college costs, and financial need. They receive their monies after completion of the first semester and submission of a transcript of their grades. The recipients this year included Marissa Gannon of Haldane High School. She is a resident of Cold Spring and will attend Cortland. She isn't sure of her college major.

Children's Committee members who are on the scholarship committee are: Frann DeAngelis, Frankie Feehan, Joyce Hughes, Terry Siegel, Patricia Tomassi and Tracey Walsh.

The Putnam County Children's Committee, was first assembled in 1918, in the days when there were no trained workers, no Welfare Department, and children whose parents died or deserted them were sent to orphanages. This committee now endeavors to promote and improve the conditions of children in Putnam County and to assist in developing resources to benefit the children of the county. This allvolunteer committee counts on the community at large for its financial assistance and is eligible to receive corporate matching grants. All of the taxdeductible donations are used to help Putnam County children, not only in scholarship awards, but also in providing the extras to children in foster homes, such as allowances, birthday gifts and holiday money. Support for this program comes through the generosity of residents to an annual letter appeal. For further information regarding the committee please call Committee President Janet Canniff at 845- 225-3225.
