Philipstown Senior League places First in Southern District 17 Division Series Playoff
The Senior League division held a season ending playoff last week. The Philipstown Pirates, having earned a first round bye played Fishkill's Royal Carting last Tuesday. Leadoff hitter Billy Campbell hit a sharp single to left, wasting no time stealing second and third. Kyle Van Tassel connected for a single, scoring Campbell and putting the Pirates swiftly on the board. Pirates ace Max Tiffany Miller teaming up with catchers Famighetti and Charkowski, took the hill in front of crowd of 80 and went 6 innings. Royal Carting came back in the bottom of the first with one of their own.
A Second inning rally started by JJ Dean with a shot up the middle. Nick Torchia, reaching on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a wild pitch. Will Dean took first on a walk, which gave way to a hot hitting Campbell, who drove the ball to center, scoring Torchia. The Pitching dual continued until the top of the fifth, when Kyle Van Tassel hit another Pirates leadoff single. Derek O'Dell blasted a triple off the right center wall, scoring Van Tassel. 16-year-old Matt Calandrillo sacrificed in O'Dell putting the Pirates up 4-1. Royal Carting came back again with one of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Billy Campbell, reaching on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored as Van Tassels cracked his third hit of the day. In the top of the seventh a hungry Fishkill squad put one up on the board. With the scored tied 5-2, bases loaded and one out "bazooka arm", Nick Torchia came in for short relief, striking out the next batter. The final out was a worm burner down the third-base line sucked up by line-hugging Van Tassel. Other notables: JJ Dean playing left, tracked down four fly's in the jet stream Kyle Van Tassel, bringing his lumber, hit a season best 3 for 4. Final Score: Philipstown 5 - Fishkill 3.
Thursday June 14, 2007: Philipstown met with Fishkill's (Town police) squad for the 2007 championship game.
Matthew Calandrillo took the mound for the Pirates, teaming up with catcher Will Charkowski. In the top of the first, Billy Campbell walked, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Kyle Van Tassel. Derek O' Dell hit a drive to left scoring Campbell. Rafael Famighetti followed with a single to right scoring O'Dell. Calandrillo walked. With two men on, a hot hitting JJ Dean drove a double to the fence PPscoring Famighetti and pinch runner Conor McCann. Philipstown took a 5-0 lead but a tough hitting Fishkill squad came back with 4 of their own in the bottom of the first.
Fishkill tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Torchia came in relief in the fifth and shut down the middle of the line up. With the score tied 5-5 in the top of the sixth Luke Solomon slapped one to left. Luke quickly stole second. Christian Callaghan took a 2- 2 pitch to right center for a double scoring Solomon. Will Charkowski followed with a hit to deep right, scoring Callaghan to put the Pirates up 7-5. 15- year-old Nick Torchia put up some major heat, whiffing two in the bottom of the sixth. Van Tassel ended the inning with a long jumping throw from third to a stretching Will Dean at first. In the bottom of the seventh impressive defensive plays by Tiffany-Miller and Derek O'Dell put the Pirates one out away from victory. A pumped up Torchia struck out the final batter to end the game.
