PVHS Names Anthony Rush 2007 Valedictorian
Anthony (Tony) Rush, son of Diane and Frank Rush of Putnam Valley, has been named the Valedictorian of the Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 2007. His weighted cumulative grade point average is 99.53.
A member of the PVHS National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society (of which he is currently the president) and the Tri-M Music Honor Society, he also received a 2006 Putnam County Youth Award for his community service endeavors.
Tony has been very involved in school plays and musicals produced by PVHS TheatreWorks. He has held various leadership positions in the Make a Difference Club and is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). He is also co-president of the PVHS student government.
Tony is the PVHS blood drive captain, which coordinates the blood drives at the high school. On December 28, 2006, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting's highest rank. As part of his Eagle Scout project he built a community event sign at Oregon Corners, in Putnam Valley. Recently he also achieved the status of Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow, which, he says, "is kind of like Boy Scouting's National Honor Society."
Both as a junior and senior, Tony was captain of the Varsity Cross Country Team (5 years participating, 4 years as captain), Varsity Swimming Team (4 years participating, 2 years as captain) and Varsity Track and Field Team (4 years participating, 4 years as captain). He is also a member of the CORE Team for his church's Youth Group, and is involved in planning their Annual Senior Citizen Prom. He is also a member of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department. His Valedictorian status makes him the winner of one of two PVHS PTSA 2007 Senior Achievements Awards.
Tony recently learned that he will attend Annapolis, the United States Naval Academy. He is only the second PVHS senior to have been accepted into a US uniformed service academy. Tony said, "I first became interested in the Naval Academy when my cousin, who recently returned from Iraq, graduated from Parris Island as a new Marine three years ago. Watching him cross over that threshold into his new life made me realize that his new character was achieved by joining the military service. From that point on, I knew a military academy, more specifically the Naval Academy, was the place I was destined to be. It is such an honor to be accepted into the United States Naval Academy, especially since President Jimmy Carter and astronauts Alan Shepard and James Lovell (Apollo 13) all graduated from there.
"I have worked extremely hard throughout my high school career to get where I am today. When I first read my acceptance letter, I was in shock and, at the same time, very excited. As I read the letter, I felt as if all my work throughout high school has finally paid off. Even though I will be leaving for Annapolis just five days after my high school graduation, I am looking forward to the experience I will have while attending the Naval Academy. I am fully prepared to accept the challenge of defending America's freedom, honor, and dignity."
