Where Does the Buck Stop?
To the Editor:

Recent letters from Phil Vartanian and Rodney Dow should be eye-openers for all of us in this community. It is frightening to think that the few people who have put their time and energy into trying to save the health and beauty of Philipstown are throwing up their hands in total frustration at what is being allowed or overlooked by the authorities.

We should all be up in arms about the infractions that are being tolerated and the blatant destruction of the environment we see all around us: the clearcutting of trees, the destruction of wetlands, and the construction of enormous energy-guzzling trophy houses. Global warming has apparently not registered on the consciousness of many of our residents and the various boards that are supposed to be watching out for us.

Instead of vilifying people like Russ Cusick and Suzie Gilbert who care about saving this place, we should be grateful that there are residents who are trying to protect this community from the fate of places like Long Island. No one wants to keep people from "sharing the same planet ", Mr Knox, Esq., we just want to save the planet for your children and ours.

So we come to the ultimate question: According to former members of the CAC, environmental violations are being ignored. Who is minding the store? Apparently, not the people who are supposed to. Maybe we need a new storekeeper.
