St. Aloysius Students Head North to Visit Haldane Pan Pals

Friday, June 8 was an exciting day to be a fourth grade student in Mrs. Windels' class. That's the day her students finally met their Pen Pals from St. Aloysius School in Harlem. St. Aloysius students began their day on 132nd Street and 7th Avenue, then walked to Metro North for their exciting ride up the Hudson River. They missed their intended train and were running behind schedule - or so they thought. Little did they know that Haldane opened 2-hours late that day. St. Aloysius' unexpected - but fortuitous - delay worked out perfectly for both schools!

Chaperoned by their teacher, Ms. Chanta Scott, and intrepid parent volunteers, the students walked from the Cold Spring train station to the Haldane ball field on Route 9D. Mrs. Windels' class was waiting impatiently, especially since their meeting was rained out earlier in the week, and was more than ready to greet their St. Aloysius correspondents. After quickly calling out names, the students met their pen pals and became fast friends. They spent the day playing ball, eating pizza and just getting to know each other.

Throughout the school year Mrs. Windels' class has corresponded with Ms. Scott's class, a collaborative effort that's been in place for three years. "Watching the kids interact was wonderful!, said Mrs. Windels, "Through the nearly lost art of correspondence, the students formed a bond that was so evident to me when they met. It was as if they were old friends." More to the point, Wylie McDonald, a Haldane fourth grader, had this to say, "I had a lot of fun playing with our pen pals and tie dyeing awesome tshirts." That says it all!

A Common Threads project, the event was a huge success thanks to the support of The Haldane School Foundation, students, teachers and many parent volunteers. Common Threads, a project of the Haldane and Garrison PTAs, brings multicultural and diverse experiences to local students. For more information, email CommonThreadsPTA@aol.com.
