Common Threads Art at Haldane
Haldane artists celebrated the ideals of Common Threads throughout the school year. Each grade level created projects that enriched the grade level curriculums. Each kindergarten class worked on large fabric hand printed self-portrait "Me Banners". First graders created a crazy quilt of drawings of their families doing something together. Second grade artists experimented with gyotaku (Japanese fish prints). Third grade artists spent a month celebrating Chinese New Year. They learned about ribbon dancing, calligraphy, and origami and designed beautiful Year of the Pig brush paintings. They also explored aboriginal dot paintings. Fourth grade artists enhanced their study of Native Americans. They made Navajo sand paintings, pictographs and ceramic pendants. Fifth graders learned about Latin American Art and created molas. They also explored aboriginal 3-D paintings on wood.
The above projects are highlights of the Common Threads strand of the elementary art program. These craft projects were made possible through a Haldane School Foundation grant. All of the Common Threads artwork is dedicated to the memory of Ivy Avildsen.
