Proposed Nelsonville Blasting Ordinance Could Impact Cemetery Operations Folks who keep Nelsonville beautiful acknowledged by Maria Theodore Leiter

| One Nelsonville resident is doing more than her part to beautify the neighborhood. On any given day, Valerie Robertson can be seen watering the pretty flowers that line the entrance to the Village Hall. Robertson volunteered her services to plant the lovely posies and, like any garden lover, returns each day to nurture her project along.
At the June 18, 2007 meeting of the Nelsonville Village Board, Robertson was officially thanked by the trustees for her efforts. They will be sending her a letter of gratitude from the Village.
"Everyone comments on the beautiful flowers," said Trustee Anthony Merante.
"She's here every day watering," added Mayor William Merando.
Along the same line of tribute, Merante thanked the Royal Carting Company for the work they did in ridding Village residents of unwanted bulk items during the Village clean-up day.
"I'm sure they aren't used to getting complements," Merante joked.
Doug Logan, who is the Caretaker at the Cold Spring Cemetery, shared concerns over a proposed blasting ordinance that the village is considering.
"When they dig a grave, they never know if they will find a boulder," he said. "They have to take it out right away." Logan was concerned that the proposed law would impede the cemetery worker's ability to quickly inter people by instituting requirements that might delay the process.
Trustee Merante indicated that he believed the legislation would only clear up matters of financial accountability, but said that he would speak to the Village Attorney about the cemetery's concerns and get back to him.
The Board unanimously approved the reappointment of Jonathan Bradley to the Planning Board. They also agreed to send a letter of support for the Town of Philipstown in their efforts to secure funding for improvements to the Town Park and Town Hall.
A discussion of some ongoing road issues took place. Merante said that he was afraid that there might be a problem with the bridge on Peekskill Road because he was aware of a clanking sound when cars cross that bridge, which traverses the Foundry Brook. Logan said that he has been aware of the issue, and has been in touch with the County about it. He said that he had a letter from the County that states that they were aware that a problem existed. He believes that the issue is not with the bridge itself, but with the elements that abut the bridge, which are pulling away from the structure.
Trustee Tom Corless asked Mr. Logan to provide him with a copy of that letter.
Logan said that he continued to be concerned about the speed at which drivers travel that particular road, which is used as a short cut from Route 9D to Route 301 and 9. He suggested that a stop sign might be useful.
Another matter Mr. Logan raised was of the run-off from Division Street over the embankment along Foundry Brook. "I can see a line of dead trees," he said attributing that to too much run-off. Merando said that he would take a look at it. The issue had been raised at a previous board meeting, where the idea of placing a curb on Bank Street was floated.
The Board discussed scheduling three public hearings covering a blasting ordinance, a proposed law limiting vehicle weight limits on certain roads, a possible new dog curbing law and some proposed Code Enforcement changes. The dates and times of these public hearings will be announced at a future meeting.
