Seventh Annual Great Hudson River Paddle Begins Trek
Green Day Festival to welcome paddlers and visitors

The Seventh Annual Great Hudson River Paddle (GHRP) launched from Albany at 8am on July 1, and will continue through Wednesday, July 11 making stops along the river as it makes its way down river to the Battery in New York City.

This Saturday, July 7, the paddlers are scheduled to be in Cold Spring and the Western Putnam Economic Development Council has organized a festival to coincide with the arrival. The 'Green Day Festival will be a fun-filled day of demonstrations, watersports and learning in the Village of Cold Spring. As the Hudson River Paddle fills Main Street with kayakers and shoppers, the Festival will fill tents on Main Street with a variety of environmentally concerned organizations and teachers.

Included in this year's contingent of paddlers is a group of Philipstown teenagers led by David Hardy of the local non-profit organization Building Bridges, Building Boats, who will be assisted by some young veterans of previous years' rowing camps and paddles. A number of high schoolers will be rowing and camping their way from Albany to Cold Spring; middle school rowers will be joining at Saugerties and continuing through to Cold Spring.

The paddlers are scheduled to arrive in Cold Spring on Saturday, July 7, sometime between 10am and 2pm. But, before the kayakers come storming ashore for the festivities, they will be heading to Stony Point for the annual Water Fight on the Hudson. The local troops will be departing the shore of Cold Spring at Dockside. There will be a strategy meeting before the fun-filled battle begins at 10am. Hudson Valley Outfitters will make kayaks and super soakers available.

For those not making the long trip, the Outfitters will be offering a kayak tour, but space is limited and there is a fee. Call them at 265-0221 to see if there is still space.

For a more sedate experience, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Greenway, the Open Space Institute, Hudson River Watertrail Association, the Philipstown Greenway, Grosolar and Hudson River Estuary will be available to answer questions on what it means to be green. Great opportunities to become involved in the new wave of sustainable ideas that are being developed in the Hudson Valley.

Children can join Dr. Ray Phillips as he bakes bread and other goodies in solar powered ovens. The ovens are made from everyday materials such as cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, glue and heat resistant plastic wrap. When the baking is done, everyone can partake in the freshly baked goodies.
