Putnam Valley Summer Blood Drive Set For July 17

The Putnam Valley Fire Department will be hosting its summer blood drive and hamburger cookout on 17 July from 2:30 until 8pm at the main firehouse on Oscawana Lake Road. As usual, they will be serving hamburgers, hot-dogs and snacks. What they really need is blood donors, both old and new.

One of the few things that never changes about the world we live in is the need for blood. The blood supply is once again at significantly low levels. Your community needs every pint, especially during the summer travel season. If you have ever driven by an accident or watched a natural disaster on the evening news and said to yourself that you would do something to help if you could.... well, donating blood is one of those things.

If you are healthy enough to donate, why not consider sharing the luck with some people who could really use it? Now, more than ever, please make regular blood donations a part of your life. Even with lots of effort put into finding alternatives to natural blood products, there still is no substitute available. The blood that saves lives is the blood that is already processed and in circulation when the emergency happens. Collected blood will be processed, out to hospitals and back in circulation in less than 4 days. That is how critical the need is right now.

You need to be in good health, weigh at least 110 lbs and be at least 17 years old. If you're over 75 you will need a note from your doctor. Donating is almost painless. The whole process takes about an hour but the donation only lasts about 10 minutes. Bring a book, bring a friend, and roll up your sleeve. Call, send e-mail, sign up at Town Hall, or just walk in.
