Tilly Foster Photovoltaic System Looks Toward Sponsorship County Courthouse expected to be on time and on budget by Margaret Sternberg
Raising the monies for the purchase of the photovoltaic system for Tilly Foster Farm now appears to be dependent upon corporate sponsorship and will not add another burden onto county finances.
The June 19, 2007 meeting of the Putnam County Legislature's Physical Services Committee saw a presentation prepared by Legislator Tony Hay that relieves the County of the financial burden of installing the system, which would be used to generate electricity for the Farm.
Starting with a newly-designed attractive logo for the Farm that shows a fenced-in sketched horse in the foreground with the outlines of a barn in the back, Hay proposed that various corporate sponsors could buy space on one of the signs dotting the area that advertise the Farm. Additional areas for display of the sponsorship logo are in the planning stages.
The project will be put out to bid via the Internet for about two weeks. The minimum bid will be $25,000 with an annual $5,000 renewal fee to start. Possible advertisers in the county as well as throughout the country will be contacted for interest.
The company logo will go at the top of the sign, which will also read, "A proud sponsor of Green Technology." Committee Chairman Vinny Tamagna said the County is expected to make selection of a sponsor based upon bidding criteria that would seek companies that are environmentally sensitive and supportive.
In the other presentation of the evening, an update was given on the construction of the new court house.
According to John Milano, from Hill International, the construction managers, the work is on schedule to be completed September 8, 2007. The major "building systems," such as HVAC and electrical were expected to be completed the week of June 25, while elevators are expected to be completed in August 2007.
The courthouse will be 60,477-square feet, with four courtrooms, a "drug court," storage areas, and additional capacity as needed.
The project's finances are currently within budget, and Milano expressed confidence that the project would be remain on time and within budget through the end of the project. Court offices are expected to be moved into the new building before the end of the year.
In a follow up to the report on the courthouse, and the space that will be created in the county office building when the court system vacates the building, Chairman Tamagna said that he had received information from the various county departments on their space needs, which will now be evaluated by the individual members of the committee formed to deal with the allocation of the additional space.
In what has become a monthly discussion on work on Peekskill Hollow Road, Legislator Sam Oliverio requested an update on the planned construction work. Commissioner of Highways Harold Gary said that work is expected to start in the fall of 2007 and that actual reconstruction of the road is expected to begin in the spring of 2008. The work is expected to be completed by spring 2009.
The July meeting of the Physical Services Committee will be posted on the PCN&R's website as soon as it becomes available.
