The Payback Way to Look at Things To the Editor:
How much are fire department services worth?
Many district residents pay at least $48.23 per month for Basic Family Cable (with Senior Citizens discount). An "Optimum Online" charge of $29.95 per month costs more. (After the 6- month introductory period passes, that will raise by $20 per month - a rather large increase). A local garbage hauler's current rate for basic residences, with once per week pick-up is $31 plus tax.
It seems that these services must be paid for, if we want them. In addition, County, Town and school taxes must be paid - regardless. It boggles the mind. We all want to say "enough."
But the Philipstown North Highlands Fire District is a very low-cost part of this scenario. Everyone works for free. Some of your neighbors do not say "What's in it for me? What's the payback?" They leave their homes and families, regardless, and come to your aid.
The average tax increase for the proposed renovation of the North Highlands fire house is $2.40 per week. Please vote "yes" on August 14. Thanks!
