Gospel Choir Brings "Joyous Wave of Song" to Chapel
Members of the Chancel and Youth Choirs of the Antioch Baptist Church, Bedford, New York, will once again bring to the Chapel of Our Lady Restoration a "joyous wave of song," from spirituals and hymns to traditional gospel. The Sunday afternoon concert is at 4 on July 29, and admission is free.
The New York Times said of weekly worship services in Bedford, under the direction of Earl Brown at the organ, "Every Sunday morning, a joyous wave of song seems to lift a white clapboard church on the corner of Church and Main Streets right off its foundation."
A famous neighbor dropped by one day, none other than Andre Previn, and he and the choir went on to collaborate on a CD, What Headphones? It was Previn's "best album since his return to jazz", according to the All Music Guide review, which said the choir inspired him to take off on a down home gospel blues, You Are My All.
Two of Earl Brown's daughters have joined him in music ministry. Gwen Brown-Murray serves as assistant to the director of music and pianist, and Earlena Thevenin, who has a B.S. in Music Education from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, serves as director of choirs.
The choirs appeared in the chapel once before, in July 2006, to rousing applause. They present two concerts annually, one to celebrate another year of their existence and the second to help raise funds for the Katonah Community Center.
The chapel is located at 45 Market Street, Cold Spring, and free parking is available on weekends at the adjacent Metro North Train Station. The music series is partially funded by the Putnam Arts Fund, supported by public funds from the county and administered by the Putnam Arts Council. Contributions are welcome.
