Undersheriffs Attend Training Conference
Thirty-Six Undersheriffs from across New York State recently attended an annual training conference in Albany, NY, sponsored by the New York State Sheriffs' Association and the New York State Sheriffs' Association Institute. These training conferences have been conducted for twenty-one consecutive years, and affords these officers not only the chance to receive training, but to meet with their colleagues around the state and discuss common issues.
Undersheriffs are appointed directly by the County Sheriff and most often serve as the chief administrative officer for the Sheriff's Office. In this role, Undersheriffs review all operations of the office, including the Sheriffs' road patrol and investigative divisions, the county jail, the civil law enforcement division, court security, and 911/communications and dispatch division.
This year, the Undersheriffs heard presentations on such topics as: mortgage fraud, from a representative of the State Banking Department; labor relations and employee corrective actions; workplace violence; the Sheriffs' VINE program, which allows victims of crimes to be kept informed of the incarceration status of offenders and whether they have been released from custody; a telemedicine project sponsored by the State which will allow some jail inmates to receive medical treatment from a doctor linked to the jail by the Internet and special medical equipment; and Project Lifesaver, an innovative program used to aid patients and families suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other conditions, and which uses state-of-the-art tracking technology to help locate wandering or lost people.
Undersheriffs also heard from representatives of New York's Division of Criminal Justice Services regarding access to law enforcement data, and from an Undersheriff who participates with mass fatality assistance teams called into action during events such as the World Trace Center disaster, plane crashes, and natural disasters.
New York Sheriffs remain committed to providing education and training to advance the professionalism of all aspects of our Sheriffs' Offices. The program is offered without fee to participating counties, who only cover the costs of lodging and meals for their employees.
