"Cold Spring Goes Green"
By Page McIntyre

"Paper or plastic?" that's something we hear a lot. But what we don't think about is the 14 million trees that were destroyed to provide us with those paper bags at the grocery store. We also don't think about the fumes and harmful chemicals released into the air each day because of the production of plastic bags, or that plastic bags take 1000 years to compose, but actually never compose completely! Many sea animals mistake them for food, causing them slow and painful deaths. I'm sorry to bombard you with all these terrible but very true facts but there is something you can do. The answer is reusable bags!

If every New Yorker reduced their consumption of plastic bags, in just one year, waste would be reduced by 5 million pounds. A reusable bag needs to be used only 11 times to have a lower environmental impact than 11 plastic or paper bags. Many other countries are doing this and we should be doing this too! You can buy your very own reusable bag for just $2 and make a big difference! You can purchase a "Cold Spring Goes Green" reusable bag at any of the following businesses; The Country Goose, Payning by Caryn, and Charlie's Deli. Or they will be sold outside of Foodtown on July 15 in the morning. Also for one week (July 21-28) I strongly encourage all of Cold Spring to please take part in "Cold Spring Goes Green Week". Reduce, reuse, and recycle for one week, make an extra effort to make your lives more environmentally friendly! I'm also trying to involve kids in this too. I will be doing some activities focused on recycling with some of the kids at the Philipstown Recreation camp and getting them involved in their own homes and in our community which will include a contest. Children ages 5-10 will be able to register for the contest at Foodtown on July 15 from 9-12. My name is Page McIntyre and I'm a Girl Scout doing this for my "Gold Award", so please take a part in "Cold Spring Goes Green Week!" I would like to say thank you to the Chamber of Commerce and Nat Prentice for their support with this project.

Thank-you and feel free to call me with any questions at 265-4065 . Remember, not paper...not plastic...but reusable!
