Philipstown Lady Lightning 2007 - District 17 Champions Senior Softball Champions
While trying to fit in a softball season between school games, travel teams, work and may other things, the Philipstown Lady Lightning Senior softball team had a very successful 5-3 regular season and then beat Lagrange 2 straight in the District 17 Little League All Star tournament. It is believed that this is the first time a Philipstown Little League team won a District 17 championship in the over 50 year participation of Philipstown in District 17 Little League.
This year Little League made a change to its All Star format for girls over 12 allowing 13- 16 year olds to play on the same team. This worked to Philipstown's advantage as the 15-girl team had six 16 year olds, one 15 year old, three 14 year olds and four 13 year old girls on its roster. This blend allowed manager Bill Marsh to spread the playing time to all girls when other activities cut down on the number of girls available for a game.
During the season the pitching was handled by Chelsea Lisikatos, Laura Campbell, Jenn Lombardo and Katlyn Mastrantone, all of whom won games.
Excellent hitting and fielding were also provided by Cassie Barcavage, Megan Barcavage, Alex Milner, Liz Milner, Jade Lyons, Chloe Solomon, Emily Marsh, Lily Rubino, Meghan Spratt, Gina DiMeo and Holly Whiston. Philipstown was in every game and pulled out exciting regular season victories over Beekman 8-5 and Lagrange 9- 7.
In the District 17 All Star tournament on July 1 at Lagrange Philipstown broke open a close game with 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth on route to a 11-6 victory. Chelsea Lisikatos picked up the victory with 4 innings of 2 hit - 4 strikeout pitching after Laura Campbell held Lagrange to 2 runs over the first 3 innings. Chelsea had 2 hits including a triple and 3 RBIs and Liz Milner had a triple and 3 RBIs also. Katlyn Mastrantone had 2 hits also and Chloe Solomon had a triple.
Coach Nick Lisikatos joined manager Bill Marsh for the tournament, helping Philipstown to victory in the final game July 9 pitched by Chelsea 9-2. Chelsea struck out 10 and also contributed a hit and 3 stolen bases. Laura Campbell had 3 hits, Cassie Barcavage had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, Jenn Lombardo had a triple and two RBIs and Katlyn Mastrantone drove in 2 key runs in a four run first. Excellent defense was played by all, including Jade Lyons, Holly Whiston, Emily Marsh, Lily Rubino and Gina DeMeo.
Philipstown will next play next Monday night July 16 at District 18 in Rockland county - In the Section 2 round - time and opponent to be announced.
