Put Valley Sunset Series Kick-off is a Rockin' Success
The Greyhounds bring the 50's alive

The Valley was alive with some great nostalgia at the Putnam Valley Sunset Series' Season Kick-off, 50's Night. It was like taking a trip down memory lane. As you entered the event, the first thing that caught your eye was the "The Road Knights" classic cars, strategically showcased to set the mood. Each car brought back memories or created new ones. There were spectators reminiscing, who talked about "In the day…" and others imagining what it would be like to get behind the wheel of "one of these beauties." George Tompkins, president of the classic car club, said that one member, Gary, had just put the finishing touches on his classic car to make the maiden voyage to this event.

The crowd, over two hundred, weathered the high temperatures but were pleasantly surprised to feel the cool breeze which made for comfortable viewing. Even the sun shined, with an orange hue while setting, causing some pink to flash across the sky. There were a few poodle skirts and many ducktails, as well as other 50's attire that adorned the crowd.

Chris Cassone with Jim Nowak opened the concert with classic songs including many old-time favorites from over the years. Each tune heightened the atmosphere, with the audience impulsively jumping in to sing along. You could not help but get that toe-tapping feeling. Rumor has it that they will be back to perform July 17 at the Sunset Series Open Mic Night. The evening's finale was embraced by the magical presence of The Greyhounds, a true 50's group with heart. Their selection of oldies caused the audience to spontaneously jump up and dance, while others to sing and sway to the lyrics of their youth. No matter what age you were, you could not help but experience the power of their music.

Putnam Valley Arts proudly highlighted a number of local artists including Jess Ellard (exhibit coordinator), Ester McHenry and Carolyn Smith. Their Art in the Park exhibit is featured at all the Sunset Series concerts.

Theodora Moeller promises that this is just the beginning to an exciting Series. There are many other special events, movie nights partnering with the community, and concerts, including folk rock with Marc VonEm and American Roots with the Hudson Rhythm Boys. There will something for everyone's taste. She humbly said that the Sunset Series is a group effort by all the many dedicated staff and volunteers to make it all happen.

For additional information about the many Sunset Series Events call The Recreation Department 526-3292 or visit the Sunset Series website, www.PVSunset.com. The next Sunset Series event is the Unplugged - Open Mic Night July 17 at the Leonard Wagner Memorial Town Park. Participates can sign up at 6pm and the show will start at 6:30.
