Five Youths Charged at Putnam Valley Beer Party

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that five youths face charges of trespass and underaged possession of alcohol after deputies broke up a beer party in Putnam Valley over the past weekend. One of the youths was additionally charged with unlawful possession of a dangerous knife.

According to the Sheriff, at about 12:30pm on Saturday, July 7, 2007, the Sheriff's Office received several telephone calls from residents along Doe Drive in Putnam Valley complaining of a party of youths on privately owned wooded property off that road. Sergeants Paul Boscia and Michael Szabo and Deputies Luigi Osso, Kevin McManus and Jason Quick investigated the complaints and found three males, aged 18 to 19, and two females, aged 17 and 18, in the area. Two of the youths hail from Putnam Valley, two are from Carmel, and the other is from Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County.

Officials charged the five youths with trespass and unlawful possession of alcoholic beverages. Those offenses are violations, with the most serious charge carrying a penalty of up to fifteen days in jail and a fine of up to $250.

In addition, officials charged one person in the group, Mr. Kevin Newman, aged 18, of Putnam Valley, with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor, because he allegedly had an illegal gravity knife in his possession. That charge is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine upon conviction.

All five defendants were released on their own recognizance. They are scheduled to appear in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court on July 19th to answer the charges.
