Anna Warner's Border Garden Featured on Garden Day at Constitution Island
On Saturday, July 28, 10am to 4pm, the Constitution Island Association will host one of its end-of-the-month events, emphasizing Anna Warner's border garden and her book, Gardening By Myself. Guided by this book, the original Warner garden has been restored by present-day volunteers.
There will be tours of the restored garden, lead by members of the Association's garden committee, between 11am and 2pm, in addition to tours of the historic Warner house, preserved as it evolved from 1837 to 1915 when the family lived there.
As the Constitution Island Association honors its volunteer gardeners, visitors can meet other gardeners, members of garden clubs, horticultural and gardening organizations, and representatives of area public gardens and arboreta. Gardeners and garden lovers can learn new skills and find answers to their gardening questions.
Throughout the afternoon, there will be musical entertainment. Visitors will be encouraged to take part in the tours and events, picnic on the lawn, explore the ruins of the Revolutionary fortifications on the Island, walk the trails, take a boat ride on the Hudson, and imagine the views as the Warners enjoyed them.
A hardcover facsimile of the original 1872 edition of Anna Warner's Gardening By Myself, published by the Association, will be available for purchase that day. In this book, Anna Warner tells of her passion for gardening and describes her methods. She wrote the book to encourage a natural "old fashion garden" verses the formal, geometric garden style of the day, and to persuade other women to take up the activity, with little help from hired gardeners.
Admission is $10; $9 for seniors; children 6 and under free. Shuttle service from the Cold Spring Metro-North Railroad parking lot to Constitution Island will be provided during the day. Event is 'rain or shine.'
