Composters Come to Philipstown
Did you know that about onethird of the space in our landfill is taken up with organic waste from our yards and kitchens? This is just the type of material that can easily be composted to create beautiful, rich soil that is ideal for adding back into yard and garden.
A group calling itself Local Yokels for the Earth will be offering composters for sale at the Cold Spring Farmers Market on July 21 and July 28. The composters will be available at cost, and is a service provided by the Local Yokels to make composting easy, accessible and affordable for the community.
Two composters will be available: The Earth Machine, a closed bin with a locking lid and harvest door, is great for kitchen scraps and yard waste and costs $40 plus tax (compare at $95 retail); and the Expandable Wire composter is $20 plus tax, and is ideal for composting leaves and grass.
The group is asking that people stop by the Cold Spring Farmers Market between 9am and 1pm on Saturday July 21 or July 28 to reserve their composters and to pre-pay with a check or cash. For those who reserve early, kitchen scrap buckets will be given free of charge! Information on composting will be available on both order days and also on the delivery date, which is Saturday, August 11. A Home Composting Handbook will also be given out for free with purchases of composters. Storage will be available for those who are away on the delivery day and need to pick up their composters later.
On August 11, residents who are picking up their pre-paid composters at the Farmers Market can learn more about composting from Master Composter Jeff Brown, who will be offering classes on how to start and maintain an efficient compost pile. So come and learn the tricks of the composting trade to create rich nutrients - yielding lush gardens, saving waste removal costs and reducing tons of food and yard waste from entering our landfills each year.
