August 4 Blowing Off Steam Parade to Honor Fulton's First Engine Successes
Two hundred years ago in August, Robert Fulton made several trial runs up the Hudson River to Albany, testing the first successful coupling of a boat and the steam engine. We are sure that he and his steamboat passengers traveling at 4 miles an hour had ample time to glance over at the lovely village of Cold Spring, thus it's reason to celebrate.
Marilyn Heberling and Leonora Burton of the WPEDC have organized a "Blowing Off Steam" Parade on August 4 at 5:30pm to add to the fun of the Cold Spring Fire Company Block Party and fireworks. The parade organizers are asking everyone to use their imagination, research skills, ingenuity and sense of fun to decorate their bikes, hats, faces, baby carriages and make costumes of all things related to steam. Parade participants should gather on the lawn of St. Mary's Church by 5:30pm. There will be a Judging Circle for those who want their costume judged with winners receiving a variety of "Best of Steam" certificates. The Cold Spring Fire Company bagpipe band will appropriately lead the parade (It takes a lot of blowing to play a bagpipe!) down Main Street to Depot Square where all will receive authentic wooden steam whistles. After the parade, everyone can follow the Pipe Band to Mayor's Park for more blowing off steam at the Fire Company's Block Party and Fireworks.
