Privileged to Participate in Environment Fair Dear Editor:
On July 7, at the invitation of Marc Sabin of Marketing Works and others in the Chamber of Commerce, I participated in the Main Street, Cold Spring events promoting Environmental Health. My part was demonstrating a solar oven made of cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, and insulation.
This 'low-tech' contrivance was invented about twenty years ago, leading to development of an organization, Solar Cooker International, that has had a world-wide impact in bring this low-cost technology to developing countries. The cooker provides free energy while avoiding the problems of gathering and cooking with firewood, coal, and animal dung.
The solar box oven was located at the base of Main Street, near the Information Office. The sun, by the way, was brilliant. Passersby were amazed to see the "slow-cooker" in action, realizing the tremendous heat produced by aluminum reflectors and absorbed in insulated black pots. Inside the pots was a batter of banana bread, kindly prepared and donated by Peter of the Cold Spring Bakery. A couple of hours later, we tried the results: fabulous!
One visitor in particular was particularly interested in the construction details. A teacher, originally from Cold Spring, works in a rural town in Texas. You can be reassured that, this fall, the kids in her second grade will be making their own cardboard box ovens.
I was delighted to have the privilege of participating in the Environment Fair in your beautiful Cold Spring and want to acknowledge the many people of the Chamber who helped me get set up.
