Library Cards Could Win Desmond Fish Book Sale Gift Certificates

Sitting on the circulation desk of the Desmond-Fish Library in Garrison is a fish bowl filled with slips of paper containing the names of over fifty people who have gotten a library card there since May 15th. On August 15, one name will be drawn, and the lucky winner will receive a $30 gift certificate for the Friends Book and Media Sale, which will run from August 17-26. People who do not yet have cards from any Mid-Hudson Library System library are invited to come to the library and register so that they can participate in this drawing. A library card gives access to many databases through the library's web page, as well as to the physical books, DVD's, Books on CD etc., which can be checked out from the library.

Two other glass containers currently sit empty, waiting. They will hold slips of paper with the names of children who have read for at least 15 minutes a day for 30 days this summer, and adults who have read at least 10 books. The winners will also receive gift certificates to the book sale. The library has always given small prizes to children through their summer reading program, but this is a special way to reward a child who has read a lot. What could be a better prize for such a child than the chance to pick out more books?

This is the first year that a reading prize will go to an adult. "We thought that it would be fun to get grown ups involved in the summer reading program, too," said Carol Donick, Library Director. " We're doing this pretty much on the honor system, as we do with the children. If you say you're read ten books we'll believe you - and the books don't all have to be the size of War and Peace. We'd like to encourage parents to read, and enter the drawing, with their children."

The Friends of the Library will also be supporting children's reading by allowing each child who attends the book sale from Saturday, August 18 to Sunday, August 26 to pick one free book from the children's section. Most children's books are just $.50 to $1, so this is an excellent way for children to start a small library of their own.

Thousands of books and other media have been donated to the Friends of the Library for the book and media sale. Most will be offered for sale for just a couple of dollars, although there will also be a "treasure trove" of rare and collectable books. The sale is always a book browser's delight, with many unusual items, old and new. "Everyone who comes to the book sale will be a winner," says the librarian.
