Cold Spring Hosts Blowing Off Steam Celebration and Parade This Saturday
Storytelling, costume parade, fireworks, honor Bicentennial commemoration of Fulton's first engine successes

Two hundred years ago in August, Robert Fulton made several trial runs up the Hudson River to Albany, testing the first successful coupling of a boat and the steam engine. "Blowing Off Steam" is the theme of the August 4 Celebration and Parade to Honor the Bicentennial commemoration of Robert Fulton's introduction of the commercial steamboat, which Fulton introduced to the world by sailing up the Hudson in 1807. Surely, Fulton and his steamboat passengers traveling at 4 miles an hour had ample time to glance over at the lovely village of Cold Spring - thus reason to celebrate!

The event is on Saturday August 4 beginning at 11am and continuing throughout the day with a grand finale "Blowing Off Steam" parade and fireworks beginning at 5pm. Family participation will make this day a fun, and historical event. Costumes of "anything related to steam" are encouraged to add flair to the festivities. Hudson River Navigator will be the Master of Ceremonies.

From 11am - 3pm, Hudson River storyteller Jonathan Kruk will be dressed as Robert Fulton and telling stories of the era. Participating visitors will learn about history from the steam engine display with pictures of steam engines built at the Cold Spring Foundry presented by Kendell Helbock from the Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum. In addition, Main Street will be lined with tents, filled with members of the Greenway, the Walkway Over the Hudson, The Hudson River Navigator,Vincent Tamagna, and the Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum. Plenty of children's activities are planned, including a steam engine display with pictures of steam engines built at the Cold Spring Foundry and a model of The Mary Powell (a steamship that ran along the Hudson River in the mid-late 1800's) presented by Kendall Helbock from the Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum.

At 5:30 children, adults, dogs and, anyone else who wants to join the parade, can are invited to participate in the "Blowing Off Steam Parade" hosted by the Western Putnam Economic Development Council (WPEDC). Attendees are encouraged to dress in all things steam: steam irons, steamed clams, steamed muscles, steam heaters, etc. The Cold Spring Pipe Band will lead the parade down Main Street. Children will receive a free authentic wooden train whistle.

The Western Putnam Economic Development Council, the Hudson River Navigator and J. Robert Folchetti and Associates are sponsors of the event. Created as a not-for-profit organization, the Western Putnam Economic Development Council (WPEDC) was established in 2006 to preserve and develop western Putnam County, NY. Bringing together businesses, not-for-profit organizations, parks, and residents, the WPEDC is leading the revitalization of the community for the 21st century.
