Steam Pipe Explosion in NYC Leaves Local Blood Supply in Emergency Status
Blood supplies were already stressed in the NY Metro Area because of the July 4th Holiday falling on a weekday. Then the explosion of the steam pipe in Manhattan happened. Several major buildings have been closed in midtown and other disruptions continue. Thousands of people who normally work in these buildings have had their lives disrupted. All of the above drains the available pool of blood donors.
"At this time, our current blood supply would last only two days for critical blood types in an emergency situation," said Dr. Robert L. Jones, NY Blood Center President and CEO. If last week's incident in midtown Manhattan had resulted in massive injuries our blood supply would have been severely stressed".
In order to avoid blood rationing or cancellation of emergency surgeries, all eligible New Yorkers who can donate are being urged to show up at their next local blood drive. In Philipstown, local residents have a chance to give by coming to the North Highlands Firehouse this Friday August 3 between 2:30-8pm. Free dinners will be given to donors beginning at 4:30 and there will be entertainment to help pass the time.
