Rachel Flaherty 2007 PGC Intern at Boscobel
Rachel Flaherty is the 2007 Philipstown Garden Club summer intern at Boscobel. Every year the PGC partners with the community's environmental/ horticultural organizations to give local youth an opportunity to gain experience as their first job, to discover how much they like working outdoors; or for résumé building or consideration for a college major and eventual vocation.
Rachel's primary responsibility is maintaining the Rose Garden. Her goal is to make every rose look as beautiful as it can be. This involves clipping and weeding as well as deadheading. Japanese beetle control is different this year; she is picking them off the bushes one by one rather than using a spray because it also kills bees.
Rachel feels she enters a different world of peace and quiet as she enters the gates at Boscobel each the morning. One morning was not so peaceful, however, when she was tending her beautiful roses and almost stepped on a garter snake. Although it is a harmless snake, it was of little comfort to Rachel as she hates all snakes!
The Philipstown Garden Club and five community partners, Boscobel, Constitution Marsh Sanctuary, Glynwood Center, Manitoga, and Stonecrop Gardens, co-sponsor an 8 twenty hour week experience for students entering their junior year in high school through first year in college. The stipend is $1000. Applications are available during the months of April and May at the local libraries and the Philipstown Recreation Department as well as local high schools.
