Building Bridges Building Boats Completes Summer River Workshops

River Rats Take to the water at Cold Spring Boat Club
Building Bridges Building Boats has completed this season's Summer River Workshop for students in grades six and up. The program, hosted by Scenic Hudson at the West Point Foundry Preserve and by the Cold Spring Boat Club at their riverfront facilities, gives participants an opportunity to gain hands-on experience on the Hudson River.

This season there were three sessions lasting one week each that culminated in a serial tour of the river. The participants, a/k/a River Rats, were instructed in safety procedures and rowing skills in Foundry Cove. This was followed by excursions to Sandy Beach, Garrison, Cornwall, Constitution Marsh and Bannerman's Island. Throughout the sessions students rowed, sailed, polled and shoved the boats through a variety of conditions including wind, calm, rain, mist, and fair skies, all of which were accompanied by either favorable current, unfavorable current or no current at all.

The last week of the program was the serial river trip which, because of a drenching rain, was delayed a day in favor of a trip to the movies. The following day the students rowed from Cold Spring to Manitou followed on successive days by trips to the Annsville Creek, Verplanck and Croton Point Park. A leisurely pace allowed rowers to explore rivers, creeks, beaches and parks along the way.

The River Rats were welcomed by a number of people and institutions on the river beginning, of course, with Scenic Hudson and The Cold Spring Boat Club and including Constitution Marsh, Atlantic Kayaks, The Johannsens, and the folks at Croton Point Park. Once again the students discovered that traveling the river and meeting the people along its banks was its own reward.
