Another Way to Appreciate Our Emergency Services Dear Editor:
Surprise Lake Camp has been honored in recent years to twice host Emergency Services Appreciation Day, which was run by the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce. This event recognized the wonderful police, fire, and ambulance workers that protect our community. This year the Chamber is not holding the event, and we miss our opportunity to do something special for our emergency workers.
Certainly they deserve all the appreciation we can give them. It is remarkable to me that these people stand ready to risk their lives at a moment's notice to protect our lives and our property. They must deal with the most difficult of human circumstances, including tragedies, crises of all kinds, and the victims of accidents or crimes- the very things that most of us hope and pray we can somehow avoid having to deal with.
At Surprise Lake Camp, we enjoy a special relationship with the North Highlands Volunteer Fire Company since they are located at the bottom of Lake Surprise Road. Not only do they respond virtually immediately if there is a problem, but they find countless ways to be helpful to us, and I know they do the same for the broader community as well.
I know that North Highlands is trying to get a new fire house. I hope the community will support this effort. It is the least we can do for these brave men and women who, as volunteers, would do anything to protect us and save us if we needed them.
