Sponsor Generosity and Committee Harmony Forecast Best-Ever P.V. Town Day
by Edward Paul Greiff

After talking to Putnam Valley Town Day Committee members Ed Hertzel and Kathy Colona on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 you couldn't help but get excited about the upcoming Town Day celebration scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2007.

"We are bringing back Town Day to the townspeople," says Ed Hertzel. "Town Day is a day the Town comes together to celebrate its existence. We are all in the same boat together. The Town is whatever you make it, whatever you want it to become."

The Town Day Committee is trying to involve as many organizations, clubs, businesses, and individuals as possible. If you have a business in Town you can set up a booth in the park for free on Town Day. If you are an outsider there is a $125 fee for a booth. Doing this encourages local merchants to participate and helps them turn a profit. And this in turn will help them give a donation to the Town Day Committee to help offset expenses.

So far Mr. Hertzel reports they have received approximately $6,000 in sponsorship money to cover the cost of renting the games, activities, prizes, and other sundry Town Day needs such as "Porta Potty's" and tents. Ed Hertzel expects this figure to rise closer to $10,000 by the time Town Day approaches.

Besides financial contributions, organizations and clubs are volunteering their members to run the activities. So far some of the activities planned include an obstacle course where two at a time enter, race through the course and slide down to the finish. There's an eighteen-foot-high Fire Truck Slide, a twelve by fourteen foot "Bouncy Fun For Everyone," a Cow Milking Contest, a Pit Stop Challenge to see who can change a tire the fastest, and the list goes on with more being added every day.

As the September 15 deadline quickly approaches so does the pace of the volunteers, but there is a problem: each volunteer only has two hands when what they really need is eight like an octopus. Kathy Colona would like everyone to know that any amount of time that you can give to help out is greatly appreciated even if it is just for an hour on Town Day. Stop at the Information Booth and let them know you want to help or you can call Town Hall and ask to speak with Dawn Powell and she will gladly help you.

What makes any event successful is participation - the more the greater the end results.

The itinerary for September 15 starts with a parade at 11:00 am where each participant passes before a reviewing stand where a panel of judges will select the best float in each category. The parade should last until 1pm. The park activities and musical entertainment will start at around 2pm and continue non-stop throughout the day until 8pm when everything will shut down in preparation for the fireworks.

Once again Mike Illison and the July-4-Ever team will be putting on a nonstop fireworks display that can only be compared to the show that Macy's puts on. Each year Mike Illison tries to out-do what he did the previous year for Putnam Valley, his home town. So far he has managed to accomplish his goal. It's a show you will go home and dream about.

This years Town Day Committee has no chairman, it's just one great team consisting of Ed Hertzel, Kathy Colona, Debbie Petrantrick, Susan Rosenbeck, Ragnar Pederson, Louie Luongo, Sheryl Keating, Ann Spoonhour, Larry Cobb, Rich Chizzik, Dawn Powel, Maryann Arrien, Thea Moeller, and Town Supervisor Sam Davis as the liaison between the committee and the Town Board. The committee meets, discusses what needs to be done, someone volunteers to do it and off they go to get it done. What's interesting to watch is the excitement they generate off each other's accomplishments. It's a great example of the democratic process in action and with all the participation promised, this Town day has the earmarking to become the best Town Day ever.
