Michael Gibbons Announces Candidacy for Philipstown Democratic Ticket for Town Board Councilman
Michael Gibbons has announced that he is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Philipstown Councilman in the September 18, 2007 Democratic primary. His release is as follows:
"By gathering the necessary signatures, my friends and supporters have ensured that Philipstown residents get the opportunity to elect their own candidates during the Democratic primary on September 18th for the November election.
"I would like to introduce myself and let you know why I am seeking the Democratic candidacy for Philipstown Town Council.
"I believe that one individual can make a difference. In my years of public service in Philipstown I have come to be known for listening to the community. It has been said that I am a visionary, one who identifies problems and then does his homework to find solutions. More important, I've been praised for having the courage to speak on the behalf of the community. To summarize my credentials and give you a brief account of my positions I offer the following:
"My first appointment was to the Philipstown Greenway Committee in 1997. At our first meeting I was selected Chairperson by the members of the committee and together we secured many grants for hiking and biking. Highlights during my tenure included the creation of the "22 Hikes in Philipstown" map and the installation of bike racks and benches throughout Philipstown and Cold Spring.
"The Greenway Committee also obtained the initial funding for studies pertaining to the Town's Comprehensive Plan, which focused on the economic, development and cultural future of Philipstown. During the study, I was a volunteer on the recreation sub-committee, where I learned about the infrastructure of Philipstown.
"This experience turned out to be invaluable when I was appointed to the Philipstown Planning Board in March 2003. I continue to serve on this board today.
"In September 2005, I was appointed to the Storm Water Technical Advisory Committee, participating in the Town of Philipstown's Storm Water Management Program.
"That same year I was appointed to represent Putnam County to the State Greenway Council, and although I now represent Putnam County, I remain involved with the local chapter. This allows me to present local community issues to the regional chapter. The most recent success of this alliance is a $5000 grant from the Greenway Conservancy to Philipstown for a feasibility study of the Little Stony Point area.
"As the Putnam County representative to the Greenway Council I've also worked closely with Cold Spring and Putnam Valley and have secured funding for their Comprehensive Plan.
"In 1999, I became a member of the Garrison Fish and Game Club and now serve on the board of directors.
"I touch briefly on two of the major issues I see facing Philipstown today. When I started to attend meetings it became clear that development is not going to stop. This is why we need people on our boards who understand the issues behind community expansion and who respect the rights of all property owners. Our commercial base is shrinking, as you can see by the vacant buildings in our community, as our taxes continue to grow. If we want to avoid becoming an exclusive bedroom community we must find ways to fill these commercial vacancies and reduce the tax burden on residents. I have worked hard to strike this balance and I hope you will give me the opportunity to continue to serve you and our community as a candidate for the Philipstown Town Council. I hope you agree that our community is worth preserving and that you will help me in my efforts by electing me to serve on the town board. I look forward to a vigorous campaign and our first victory on September 18th.
