Sheriff Reports That Cold Spring Crash Victim May Have Been Drinking
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that alcohol may have played a role in a car crash that killed one man and injured another in Cold Spring on Sunday, August 5, 2007. The single vehicle crash on Route 9D claimed the life of the driver, Mr. Martin H. McGuire, aged 25, of Cold Spring, and hospitalized a passenger, Mr. Blase C. Locaparra, aged 25, of Garrison.
Sheriffs deputies say there are indications that Mr. McGuire was drinking alcohol in the hours leading up to the accident. A decision on whether or not to do a laboratory analysis for blood-alcohol content will be made by the County Coroner's office as part of an autopsy that was expected to be performed on Monday.
Mr. McGuire was reportedly driving a 1993 Toyota pickup truck southbound on Route 9D at about 4:25am on Sunday morning, with Mr. Locaparra riding as the sole passenger. As the truck approached a left-hand curve in the road, it drifted to the right and onto the southbound shoulder. Mr. McGuire then apparently tried to steer back onto the road but over-corrected, causing the truck to veer across both lanes of the road and off the northbound shoulder, where it plowed head-on into a tree. The crash happened opposite the Sandy Beach recreational area of Hudson Highlands State Park, about a half-mile north of the Village of Cold Spring.
Mr. McGuire was partially entrapped and partially ejected from the truck by the impact. Mr. Locaparra, having suffered a blow to his head in the collision, climbed out of the wrecked vehicle and walked to a nearby house on Fair Street, where he knocked on the door and asked the resident to call authorities.
Sheriff's Deputy James Stasiak was the first emergency responder on the scene. He was joined there by Sergeants Timothy Gannon and Lee Stabe and Investigator James Bambino. Officials took photographs and measurements to reconstruct the accident to determine its cause; their investigation is continuing.
Dr. William Stahl, a Putnam County Coroner, responded and pronounced Mr. McGuire dead at the scene. The Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Mr. Locaparra to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was admitted for treatment of head injuries; his present condition is unknown, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
