The Return of The Sanford Pumper Highlights Ice Cream Social for Garrison Volunteer Fire Company
The Garrison Volunteer Fire Company was founded on October 9, 1929 just days before the Great Crash on Wall Street and the start of The Great Depression. In spite of all the hardship that America experienced during those times a few dedicated individuals fought long and hard to make sure the residents of Garrison would have adequate fire protection. The members of the original Board of Directors were: William C. Osborn, Samuel Sloan, Horatio S. Rubens, Colonel Taylor Belcher, C.C. Chorley, John Donohoe and Arthur Walsh.
The first piece of apparatus purchased by the GVFC was the Sanford Pumper. It was equipped with a mid ship rotary gear pump rated at 350 gallons per minute and a 200 gallon booster tank and booster hose reel. Fully equipped with hose and nozzles, the total cost was $6,000. The Sanford was purchased by Colonel Belcher and Jim Bosco. Over the years it has needed up keep and repair and just recently was restored to its original glory. It will be on display at the Garrison Fire House on Saturday August 11 from 1-3pm.
During the viewing of the Sanford, the GVFC Auxiliary will be hosting an Ice Cream Social for the entire Philipstown community. Everyone is encouraged to come by to take a look at this magnificent example of Garrison history. Admittance is free and all who attend will be able to create their own ice cream treat. The Fire House is located on Route Nine in Garrison, 1 mile north of Graymoor and 1.5 miles south of Snake Hill Road. For more information call 424-4406
