Philipstown Town Board Passes Resolution Relating to Tobacco Advertising
Supports the reduction, re-arrangement, and/or elimination of tobacco advertising in the retail environment

The Philipstown Town Board adopted unanimously a resolution supporting the reduction, re-arrangement, and/or removal of tobacco advertising in the retail environment at its August 2 Town Board Meeting.

The resolution was considered and adopted after an informational meeting took place between Philipstown Town Supervisor William Mazzuca and Putnam County Coalition Coordinator Anthony Massarelli of POW'R Against Tobacco on June 12, 2007.

Mr. Mazzuca invited Mr. Massarelli to speak at the July 12 Town Board meeting to articulate the purpose of the resolution. He stated that, "This initiative fosters community awareness. Our goal is to educate the community about tobacco advertising. In particular, we would like to work with retailers within Putnam County to reduce tobacco advertising. We seek "cooperation not confrontation. We view the retail owners as 'potential' partners not adversaries".

He also stated that, "According to Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids website, tobacco companies spend $516 million dollars on advertising in New York State and $15.4 Billion nationwide." Finally, he stated that, "At the end of today, between 3000 to 4000 youths will have tried to smoke their first cigarette - nationwide. In New York State it is estimated that 68 youths will try to smoke their first cigarette. By the end of the year 24,900 youths in NYS will become regular smokers."

In his concluding remarks to the Town Board, he emphasized that "With your support tonight, the Town of Philipstown will join the Putnam County Legislature, the Town of Putnam Valley, and the Town of Patterson as a collective voice to the community about how tobacco advertising negatively targets our children. A voice that I hope will continue to resonate throughout Putnam County."

POW'R Against Tobacco is a community partnership created in 1992 as a four-county coalition made up of Putnam, Orange, Westchester, and Rockland Counties. POW'R's mission is to promote community awareness about the effects of tobacco use and its related lung diseases.

POW'R Against Tobacco is one of twenty-nine community partnerships throughout the State of New York funded by a grant from the NYS Department of Health - Bureau of Tobacco Use, Prevention, and Control.
