California Fugitive Captured in Putnam Valley
Suspect in brutal crimes caught after siege on house and search through woods; officers from several agencies aid in apprehension

Putnam County Sheriff Smith reports that a fugitive from California, wanted for a brutal home invasion and sexual assault there, was apprehended in Putnam Valley on August 10, 2007. Mr. Alex Brown, aged 30, whose last known address was in Sacramento, California, was captured after police officers from five area departments swarmed down upon the Indian Hill Road residence of a relative in which he was hiding out.

Sheriff's personnel, backed up by officers from the Westchester County, Yorktown, Carmel and Kent Police Departments and members of the Putnam County Emergency Response Team, converged upon the house at about 1am, after police in Sacramento notified the Sheriffs Department that they believed the suspect was there. As officers moved in to encircle the residence, Mr. Brown bolted out a back door barefooted and plunged into a thickly wooded area just a few feet away. Authorities took off in pursuit of the fleeing suspect and searched the woods using a bloodhound and a helicopter deployed by the Westchester County Police. About twenty minutes into the search, Westchester Officer Mitchell Serlin and his dog "Gracie" tracked down Mr. Brown and found him in the woods about 150 yards away from the house.

The suspect was captured by Westchester County Officers Serlin and Brian Carroll and three members of the Putnam County Emergency Response Team: Carmel Officers Thomas Johanson and Justin Fisher and Putnam Sheriffs Deputy Kevin McManus.

Authorities found three other men and two women on the Indian Hill Road premises at the time. Investigators detained and questioned them before they were released.

According to information supplied by California authorities to the Sheriffs Department, Mr. Brown is wanted on charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, assault to cause great bodily harm and sexual assault. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Superior Court of Sacramento County, charging him in connection with a 2005 home invasion in which residents were viciously beaten and sexually assaulted.

Mr. Brown was arraigned before Putnam County Court Judge James Rooney, who ordered him held without bail as a fugitive from justice in the Putnam County Correctional Facility. He will remain in the county jail while awaiting extradition to California.
