Annual Chess Tournament at Takes Place at John Jay Homestead
John Jay Homestead State Historic Site and the Max Pavey Chess Club will hold the thirtythird annual John Jay Homestead Chess Tournament on Labor Day, Monday, September 3. Registration is free of charge, and will take place between 9 and 9:30am in the Main Barn; all those wishing to play should arrive by this time. Separate, concurrent tournaments will take place for adults (including teens), and for children up to age 12. Play will continue throughout the day, concluding with the announcement of winners at 4pm. Players and their families and friends are advised to bring a bag lunch, including drink, and any snacks for the day since there are no food sales at the Homestead. Players are also requested to bring a chessboard, a chess set, and a clock if possible. Certificates will be awarded for the different levels of play at the end of the day.
Chess was John Jay's favorite game, and an original Jay family chess set will be exhibited in the Back Parlor to those touring the historic house. The imposing Federalperiod residence, built by the Founding Father in 1801, is set among beautiful grounds, charming farm buildings, and well-tended gardens. The house will be shown by guided tour from 11am to 4pm. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Children up to age twelve and members of the Friends of John Jay Homestead are admitted free.
The Max Pavey Chess Club, which will conduct the tournament, meets regularly at the Briarcliff Recreation Center in Briarcliff Manor.
