Katie Newsome Interns at Glynwood Center
Katie Newsome is the 2007 Philipstown Garden Club/ Glynwood Center intern. This program, co-sponsored by the PGC and local community environmental/ horticultural institutions, was developed 11 years ago. Its purpose is to afford opportunities to our youth to work for two months during the summer outdoors with nature and to get to know more about our community. Several past interns entered this field of work as their vocation as a result of this experience.
The friendliness of the community environment stimulates Katie; she finds intellectual as well as physical challenges in her work at Glynwood. There is the weeding...lots of it, but there is also the harvesting. She is learning about the cycle of plants and planting as well as becoming familiar with different flowers and vegetables, learning their names, and knowing the histories behind their names. She also helps assemble and distribute the weekly produce for Glynwood's CSA members.
No day is boring for Katie at Glynwood. One day, as she was picking potatoes, she touched a baby vole, a small creature not to have in a potato patch! She and other interns collected all the babies for one intern to take home and care for. Unfortunately, the mama vole is still in the garden.
The PGC Internship program is open to all students entering their junior or senior year of high school or first year of college. Students work 8 twenty-hour weeks and receive a $1000 stipend. For more information, go to www.pgcinc.org and click on "Interns."
