Celtic Day in the Park at Staatsburgh State Historic Site
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Friends of Mills Mansion are proud to again host Celtic Day in the Park. This will be the 22nd year Staatsburgh State Historic Site will celebrate this traditional family program. The spacious and picturesque grounds behind the mansion are a perfect location for this funfilled event which will take place this year on Sunday, September 16, from 11am to 5pm, rain or shine.
Celtic Day in the Park celebrates the rich Celtic heritage of thousands of people living in the Hudson Valley. Traditional activities heralded from the Celtic nations of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, Galicia, and the Isle of Man will be showcased throughout the day. The grounds of the former Mills Mansion, with its scenic Hudson River and Catskill Mountain views provide a dramatic backdrop for pipe band and dance troupe performances and sheepdog herding demonstrations. In addition, this memorable event features live music, an extensive vendor marketplace, a chance to win a trip to Ireland or Scotland, caber toss, various Celtic demonstrations, children's activities, contests, story telling, and many other cultural activities. Returning this year is a display featuring Clydesdale horses. Performers include the Brigadoons, the Glen Folk Band, Carl Peterson, the Amerscot Highland Pipe Band, Solas an Lae Dancers, Braemar Dancers, and many more. Again this year the Fishkill Fencers will host an open epee tournament and welcome spectators to cheer them on. Afterwards some fencers will don kilts and provide broad sword and claymore demonstrations during the afternoon. The event culminates in a spectacular parade of pipe bands, clan associations, and flags of the Celtic nations.
Admission to Celtic Day in the Park is $10 for adults and $2 for children ages 12 and younger. Staatsburgh State Historic Site was the country home of Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills. Many of its 79 rooms are lavishly decorated in a style reminiscent of the Gilded Age (early 1900s) in which the Mills family lived. The site is wheelchair accessible. Visitors are welcome to tour this magnificent home of the day of the event for $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free for children ages 12 and under.
