Nancy Montgomery Makes Bid for Town Council

Nancy Montgomery has announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Philipstown Councilperson. She will be on the ballot on the primary election ballot on September 18. The following is her announcement.

"'Tell them not to change a thing. I moved here because I like it just the way it is.'"

"That was my neighbor's reply when I asked him if he wanted to go with me to the 20/20 Comprehensive Plan Meeting in 2000.

"His comment really struck a chord. I realized that if I agreed with that simple idea, it was time for me to step up and get involved with the future of this remarkable place that we call home.

"My name is Nancy Montgomery. I have been endorsed by the Philipstown Democratic Committee as their candidate for Town Council.

"The Philipstown Comprehensive plan says it best, "People of the Town of Philipstown, and their elected and appointed officials can chart the future course of the Town." As a member of the Philipstown Town Board, I would enjoy the opportunity to participate in managing our present and helping to define our future.

"My instinct to serve our community is reflected in my personal biography. My roots are planted here and my family has a tradition of serving our town.

"I enjoy my active roles with the The Philipstown Recreation Commission, The Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. and The Philipstown Performing Arts Development Corporation. I'm motivated by representing the interests of our diverse population while keeping a watchful eye on how and why the public funds are spent.

"My work with the Philipstown Recreation Commission has convinced me that with foresight towards common goals, we can determine the future quality of life here. For over a year, the commission conducted public hearings, organized and analyzed data, prepared and amended proposals, and after long nights and hard work produced "The Architectural and Engineering Plan for Philipstown Park and Glyncliffe Community Center". This Plan, now adopted by the Town, details how these facilities will serve our community over the next five, ten, and twenty years.

"A true model of community growth is the Philipstown Depot Theatre. Through the hard work of The Philipstown Performing Arts Development Corp, dozens of volunteers and a dedicated staff of four, we have done an amazing job in meeting the artistic and educational needs of Philipstown. Preserving the structure of this antique gem, while showcasing local and national acts, has put us on the map.

"As a volunteer EMT, I often ride the ambulance with senior citizens who tell me that they have no one to call about their emergency. Not only are they faced with declining health; they are scared they won't be able to stay in their homes. After a life of working and raising their kids here, they can't afford to live out their days in their own homes. We need to help create financial and assistance models so that they can stay here, with their friends, in dignity.

"We can embrace the inevitable changes we face with wisdom. In 20 years, we can look around with pride and be happy that we have retained our natural beauty and small town nature.

"We can strengthen our financial base without succumbing to exploitation or becoming just another bedroom community. We have incredible talent in Philipstown. We're fortunate to have many entrepreneurs running thriving businesses and living right here in town. Their success is retained by our economy.

"A short drive to the north and south surrounds you with the havoc brought on by shortsighted development. I want to be a part of our Town Board's efforts to ensure that we don't face the same casualties.

"I look forward to a future where my children Finn(11), Jack(9), and Hudson(5) will have the opportunity to experience the quality of life in Philipstown that we all share now.

"We're all in the same boat. With your help we can secure our common future. "Feel free to contact me at 914-204-7289 or nmontgomery9 @aol.com. "
