Civil War Living History Weekend at Locust Grove
On Saturday & Sunday, August 25 & 26, 2007, from 10 am to 4 pm the 150th New York State Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the Hudson Valley Ladies Aid Society (HVLAS) welcome visitors to Locust Grove, the Samuel Morse Historic site in Poughkeepsie, NY to experience a living history program portraying the events occurring at Camp Dutchess in the city of Poughkeepsie in October of 1862 when the Civil War has been raging on for a year and a half.
At the time of this re-enactment, President Lincoln has called for 600,000 more volunteers and Dutchess County has done her part by assembling a regiment of the county's best and brightest. The men and boys who volunteer know that this will not be an easy task. They have read in the papers about Antietam where there were approximately 23,000 American casualties; about half were Union and half Confederate.
The regiment is at Camp Dutchess, citizens learning to become soldiers, and the whole county is doing their part to support them.
The people you will see are representing a slice of life from the 1860's. Their clothing, food and activities all reflect the era of the Civil War. Living history works best when you become a part of things. You are heartily encouraged to engage in conversation with the reenactors and ask questions.
