How Dare We? To the Editor:
The PCN&R dated August 1, 2007, reported a meeting of the County Legislature's physical services committee. At that meeting, Harold Gary, Commissioner of Highways, was quoted as saying that in his seventeen years "that's the first time we've ever reported to a town when we were going to start [work]."
This was his response to a resolution presented to the County and Mr. Gary by the Philipstown Town Board demanding "a date certain" when work would start on the Fishkill Road Project.
Mr. Gary's response says in a nutshell exactly what has been his attitude and relationship towards Philipstown. How dare our Town Board, or any of the Town Boards question the County and specifically the County Highway Department about projects that directly affect towns and their residents?
Mr. Gary should be reminded that the towns, including Philipstown, pay County taxes, which pay his salary.
Philipstown also pays for the workers who come here ostensibly to work on the Fishkill Road Project (dropping off drainpipe, planting stakes, etc.) then leaving, not to be seen again. The people of Philipstown are not easily "cozened" and can see through a thinly veiled attempt to make us believe the County is truly beginning work, let alone concluding it on the now twelve year, and counting, Fishkill Road re-direction.
