Neither Central Hudson nor Individuals Should Desecrate the Landscape
Dear Editor:

I love Indian Brook Road and consider myself lucky to have a home here in Philipstown. Many of us have made a considerable effort to maintain and enjoy our historic Indian Brook Road.

Stupid people used this remote area as a dumpsite and it disheartened me. Someone cut up a fiberglass boat and left the carcass adjacent to the to the road. Others with disgusting unsightly refuse did the same. Two other sites, contractor material also appeared and blighted the serene landscape.

I called Road Supervisor Mr. Roger Chirico to alert the State Park Police for assistance in cleaning up the road. The fool, who cut up the boat, left the registration and identification numbers on the carcass. A $1,000 fine is to be extracted from him for his actions.

Mr. Chirico installed signs that will hopefully deter further incidents of this disrespect of property values.

Central Hudson cleared power lines, cutting trees below the cables and left large branches, split logs and fallen stones. Leaving the rotting stumps and decayed tree trunks that eventually become the problem for our road crews to clean up. I called Mr. Chirico, within hours it was resolved.

Should our tax money pay for the lousy quick job by Central Hudson Power Company?

Is it too much to ask of Central Hudson for a plan as to what sort of work they intend to do, before they desecrate our landscape? How far does their "Right of Way" exist?

Their Code of Conduct "Environmental Statement" (appropriate ethics and obligations, compliant with applicable laws and regulations, page 5&6 "E" sect. (ii) Environmental Regs. Sect. VI "A" Personal Responsibility.) "We are committed to comply with all applicable environmental laws, rules and regulations, and to establish and maintain standards and procedures for such compliance. We believe that control of the environment effects of our facilities and operations is an integral part of our public service and responsibility. Each of us is expected to give proper consideration to environmental factors in the construction, operation and maintenance of our facilities and in providing products and services to our customers." Signed Mr. Steven Lant Chairman & CEO.

I invite Mr. Lant to look at the work, where is the respect for property values? Tree stumps, logs, telephone poles and hardware litter our roads. Mr. Jack Meyers (then Philipstown Supervisor) joined Mr. John Benjamin, Mr.Don Nice and myself to stop the cutting of healthy trees at the intersection of Avery and Indian Brook roads. Mr. Nice parked his new car in direct line of where the oak tree was to fall. These trees still exist today and are thriving.

Is the current Town Board preserving your property rights? Are they aware of this problem?

My gratitude goes to Roger Chirico and all the hard-working men who help protect our community.

Jay Vitale Philipstown
