Allen R. Pike
Longtime Patterson resident Allen R. Pike died Monday, August 20 after a six-month battle with cancer.
Born in Caribou, Maine, Pike first settled in the Putnam area in Mahopac, where he was employed by the Mahopac Public School as a Speech Therapist. He moved to the Brewster School System in the late 50's where, in addition to Speech Therapy he also directed drama classes and all school productions, an effort for which he became locally well-known with his flair for the dramatic.
He retired from Brewster Schools in 1973 and began a long career in civic involvement as a volunteer in many local organizations including AARP and Office for the Aging. He was tireless in assisting Putnam's senior citizens, helping them with taxes, driving hundreds to medical appointments and teaching them computer skills.
Long a musician, Allen sang in many local churches, including Old Southeast Church, and was a member of the Mount Hope UMC in Mahopac Falls.
Allen Pike spent 35 years amassing and publishing a genealogy of his extensive family, among whose ancestors were Albert Pike and Zebulon Pike, the latter having discovered Pike's Peak. Allen spent his 88th birthday, in 2006, atop Pike's Peak at the 200th anniversary of its discovery. Hundreds of family members celebrated him.
Final interment will be in Maine and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
