2nd Annual Hudson Highlands Greenway Triathlon to be Featured in 8th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble
The Philipstown Greenway Committee and Hudson River Navigator Vincent Tamagna, the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Hudson River Valley Greenway and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are pleased to announce the Eighth Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble will take place on September 15-16, 23, and 29-30.
Covering twelve counties with more than 160 events, participants will have the opportunity to explore the Hudson River Valley and Hudson River Estuary by boat and on foot through a variety of guided walking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and biking experiences that highlight nationally significant historical, cultural and natural resources of the Valley.
The Second Annual Hudson Highlands Greenway Triathlon will begin at the new Hudson Highlands State Park site at Dockside in Cold Spring at 9am on Sept. 16. Racers kayak six miles to Bannerman's Island and back. Then they ride their bikes the length of Philipstown, south to the Bear Mountain Bridge and north to Breakneck Ridge, retuning to Dockside. Finally, the trail run begins as competitors head in to Scenic Hudson's West Point Foundry Preserve, through the Nelsonville Nature Preserve and then up into the trails of Bull Hill, overlooking the mighty Hudson River. Individuals can take on all three elements of the Triathlon or race in teams.
Pre-registration for this event is required. Register at www.Active.com. Registration fee for individuals is $50, fee for a team is $100. For more information, go to www.HudsonHighlandsTriathlon.org or call 845-803-4145. The Race will be professionally timed by Super Race Systems using the Champion Chip timing method.
Community volunteers are needed to serve a variety of functions during the Triathlon and leading up to it. Contact the Triathlon office at info@HudsonHighlandsTriathlon.org or by calling 845-803-4145.
Michael McKee, Philipstown Greenway Committee Chair, commented, "Once again, we are highlighting the richness of opportunity for people who enjoy our local Greenway Trails: the Water Trail, Bike Routes and hiking trails in every part of our Town. In particular, we are featuring a route which will take our competitors along the proposed Hudson Fjord Bike/Hike Trail. This stretch of road north of Little Stony Point and the trials that intersect with it are heavily used every summer. We have commissioned a feasibility study for a multi-use trail which will improve access to the trails, the road and the river."
Mary Mangione, Executive Director of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area (HRVNHA) and the Hudson River Valley Greenway, expressed enthusiasm about sponsoring the eighth consecutive year of the Hudson River Valley Ramble, and stated, "The Hudson River Valley Ramble provides a great opportunity for people of all ages and ability levels to explore the landscape, trails, historic sites and communities throughout the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. With over 160 events being offered this year, there is truly something for everyone so I encourage all to participate!"
All Ramble events are led by naturalists, ecologists, geologists, historians and trained volunteers from participating groups, which include nearly 100 environmental, land conservancy, trail and historic preservation organizations such as Scenic Hudson, Inc., the Open Space Institute and The Nature Conservancy.
Many New York State historic sites and parks, as well as the National Park Service, also participate. Events are offered for every ability level and most are free. Several events offer an in-depth exploration of heritage themes such as the Revolutionary War, the Hudson River School of Art, the Great Estates and the Hudson River Estuary. Last year, participation in the Ramble swelled to over 150,000 people and with a record number of events and festivals being offered again this year another great turnout is expected.
