Stony Kill Farm Offers a Variety of September Nature Walks
September is a great month to get outdoors and appreciate nature. Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center has scheduled gentle walks, lively hikes and a spider program that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Farmstead Walk Saturday, September 1 at 2pm. A leisurely stroll around the farm looking high and low for hawks, bugs and other critters. Visit with the livestock, too. Meet at the Manor House.
Spiders! Saturday, September 8 at 2pm. See live spiders up close. Learn what they eat, where they live and a lot more about these interesting arachnids. Meet at the Manor House.
Sierra Trail Hike Saturday, September 15 at 10am. Bring the kids and explore the beautiful Sierra Trail. See what the beavers have been up to! This hike traverses rolling terrain through a variety of habitats including hardwood and coniferous forest, meadows, wetlands and the Sierra pond. Bring drinking water. Optional: bring lunch for a post-walk picnic. 2 miles. Easy, but not suitable for children under 5 years old. Meet at the Manor House.
Stop, Look and Listen Hike Saturday, September 22 at 2pm. If you were unable to join any of the other hikes, this will be a good time to catch up on all that has been seen so far. Join Stony Kills' staff naturalist and find out what they've seen and where they've been this month and go out to explore more. Bring binoculars - you never know what you'll see. Meet at the Manor House.
Sugarloaf Mountain Hike Sunday, September 23 at 10am. Hike to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and celebrate the Hudson Valley Ramble with a Stony Kill naturalist. This scenic 3-mile (4 hour) moderate/ difficult hike has superb views of the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands, a region rich in Revolutionary War history. Enjoy a cool mountain brook and shady oak trees, and learn about local wildlife and plants. Bring lunch and at least 1 quart of drinking water. Not suitable for children under 7 years old.
