Garrison Native Finishes Cross Country Moped Trip
Kevin Corkrum, son of Frank and Kay Corkrum of Garrison, is poised to complete a two month adventure traveling across the USA by moped. Following the route of the first cross-country auto journey made by Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson in 1903, the two-man team is currently in Pennsylvania heading into New York City, before completing their trip in Burlington Vermont in September.
Traveling at speeds of up to 25 mph (10 mph if going uphill), Kevin and his teammate Nick Gerard began their trip in San Francisco on July 5. They crossed through deserts, the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, the Tetons in Wyoming, and the Colorado Rockies. Enroute, they experienced heat and snow, run-ins with elk and bear, beautiful scenery plus endless miles of plains and corn fields as they traveled off the freeways on two lane country roads.
With the help of Tom Sands driving a support van - Toyota Scion, they were able to carry camping gear and extra moped parts. The vehicle was donated by Heritage Auto of Burlington Vermont, one of the many sponsors who helped make the trip possible. Corkrum, a graduate of O'Neill High School and Champlain College in Burlington Vermont, is using this trip to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. "We all have family members with cancer," Corkrum said, "and we are extremely passionate about using this trip to support cancer research." Donations may be made through their web site mopedcountry.com.
The moped team has been blogging their adventure and uploading video clips and photos on their mopedcountry.com Web site. Corkrum explained "We wanted everyone to experience our adventures along with us and to highlight the moped's values of fuel efficiency and alternative means of travel."
