Molly Freeman, 2007 Philipstown Garden Club Intern at Stonecrop Gardens

Molly Freeman is the Philipstown Garden Club intern working at Stonecrop Gardens this summer. The Philipstown Garden Club

PGC) partners with five local environmental/horticultural organizations (Boscobel, Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary, Glynwood Center, Manitoga, and Stonecrop) to give local young adults experience in working outdoors for eight weeks.

Molly is delighted with her experience at Stonecrop. She claims it's better than hanging out with her friends. Molly has acquired an appreciation of horticulture by working with erudite horticulturalists and serious college interns. She is experiencing the beauty and calm of the Stonecrop environs and the stimulation of learning. Before this summer her experience with gardening had been admiring her grandparents' garden and planting a small, backyard garden which she shared with her siblings.

Stonecrop offers its summer interns a daily opportunity to research a plant, learning its Latin name, its natural habitats, growing patterns, flowering season, compatibility with other plants, etc. Molly finds this experience conducive to thinking, which she likes to do.

Molly's constant companion is Cholmondeley, a Cairn Terrier; and during Molly's break time, the two of them are usually found on the cliffs near the pond looking for their friend, a frog with only one back leg.

Interns are usually able to juggle family vacation time and, as with Molly, soccer practice, around the eight 20-hour week because of the flexible schedules these organizations can accommodate. Opportunities for applying to this program are advertised in both the Butterfield and Desmond Fish libraries and on the PGC website, www.pgcinc.org in April/May. The stipend for the summer's experience is $1000.
