Megan Lyons Enjoys Philipstown Garden Club Summer Internship at Manitoga
Megan Lyons is the 2007 Philipstown Garden Club (PGC) Summer Intern working at Manitoga. Manitoga is one of the co-sponsors of this successful 11-year-old program involving partnerships between the PGC and 5 local environmental/ horticultural organizations. The purpose of the program is to give young adults in our communities the opportunity to experience working outof doors and perhaps gain some knowledge for a future vocation.
A morning person, Megan has no problem arriving at Manitoga between 7-7:30. "Everyone is so nice here," says Megan, "and the landscaping is beautiful!" Megan is learning all about flowers, shrubbery, and trees at Manitoga from a landscape assistant who is presently working for a degree in ecology. Megan's responsibilities involve weeding, and deadheading, etc.; and then there are times for adventure e.g., clearing rocks and debris from a stream that feeds a waterfall and lake.
Megan has also contributed to the Manitoga docent manual by assisting in the incorporation of information regarding the wildflowers on location. Her final report, required by the PGC, will be a PowerPoint presentation of the flowers and trees of Manitoga and will be available for viewing on-site this fall and on the PGC website: www.pgcinc.org.
The PGC Internship Program is an annual program offered to students entering their junior, senior year of high school or first year of college. Students work eight 20 hour weeks and receive a $1000 stipend. Applications are available at the Butterfield and Desmond Fish libraries in April/May or on the aforementioned website address.
