Info Workshop on Community Preservation Act Co-Sponsored by HH Land Trust

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust will be hosting a special meeting to explain the provisions of the Hudson Valley Community Preservation Act and explain how your town can establish a Community Preservation Fund, using a real estate transfer tax to protect open space.

The meeting will take place on September 10, 2007 from 6-8pm at the Katonah Library, 26 Bedford Road, Katonah. This two-hour session will include brief presentations by Stuart Lowrie, Andy McLaughlin and Robert McKeon. Each has led successful Community Preservation Fund campaigns, respectively, on Long Island (Suffolk County), in Warwick (Orange County), and in Red Hook (Dutchess County).

Come hear them tell what happened when they joined forces in a coalition to establish a local Community Preservation Fund where they live. From these stories, you'll learn about the scope of a CPF campaign, what can go wrong, and who is likely to fight you. You'll be able to better judge how ready your community is to undertake this effort. You'll also have an opportunity to question the experts about their experiences, and ask their opinions about your own local circumstances and the likelihood for passing a Community Preservation Fund.

Conservation advocates, community organizers, municipal officials and interested residents who support open space protection in Putnam and Westchester County should attend. If you want your municipality to create a Community Preservation Fund and establish a real estate transfer tax to fund it, and you're ready to work hard to make that happen, you should attend. If you think you might want your municipality to create a Community Preservation Fund and establish a real estate transfer tax to fund it, and you want to know more about what it takes, you should attend. Representatives of environmental organizations working to establish conservation funds in Westchester or Putnam County should attend.

This event is sponsored by The Nature Conservancy - New York, The Trust for Public Land, Hudson Highlands Land Trust, Westchester Land Trust, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, NY League of Conservation Voters, and Scenic Hudson.
